Hisense 65" CanvasTV S7 Art TV (2026, 65S7SG) Review 2026

At 65 inches, an art TV stops being a screen on a wall and becomes the wall's focal point. This is also the size RTINGS bought and measured, so the lab findings below apply directly. They describe a TV with an excellent matte screen and a convincing art mode, and a picture that is only ordinary once the lights go down.

Hisense 65" CanvasTV S7 Art TV (2026, 65S7SG)
Screen Size 65"
Panel Type Edge-lit VA QLED (matte)
Resolution 4K UHD
Refresh Rate 144Hz
HDR Formats Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, HLG
Smart Platform Google TV
Our Verdict

At 65 inches the 2026 CanvasTV is a convincing piece of wall art and a good daytime TV, thanks to a matte screen RTINGS rates highly. It is not a home-cinema TV: edge-lit, low in contrast and blurry with fast motion.

Best for: Living rooms where a 65" art display should hang flush and cope with daylight

A 65-Inch Painting That Copes With Daylight

The reason to buy a CanvasTV is its "Hi-Matte" screen. On a glossy TV, a window opposite becomes a bright rectangle in the middle of the picture. RTINGS found the CanvasTV's coating "does an excellent job" with direct reflections, and that ambient light has "barely any impact" on black levels or colours. That matters more at 65 inches than at 55, because a bigger screen catches more of the room's light.

Everything needed to make it look like a framed picture is in the box: a magnetic teak frame (white and walnut are sold separately), an UltraSlim wall mount, and more than 1,000 free artworks with no subscription. The 65-inch is 1.2 inches deep without its frame and weighs 47.4 pounds, with VESA 400 x 300 mounting holes. RTINGS also points out that most inputs face the side, near the edge, so they stay reachable when the TV is mounted flush.

What Changed From the 2024 Model

This model, the 65S7SG, replaces the 65S7N (see our original CanvasTV review). RTINGS tested both at 65 inches: the new one is "slightly better", with "higher peak brightness" and a screen coating that lets ambient light have less of an impact, and its mixed-use score rises from 5.9 to 6.6. Hisense's spec sheet adds a larger free art library (1,000-plus works), a two-year US warranty, a USB 3.0 port and a 1080p game mode up to 288Hz at this size. Hisense's Canadian sheet for the old model listed Wi-Fi 5; the 2026 model has Wi-Fi 6.

The basics are the same as before: an edge-lit VA panel with no local dimming, a native 144Hz refresh rate, four HDMI ports of which two are HDMI 2.1, and Dolby Vision and HDR10+.

What RTINGS Measured

  • Brightness: SDR brightness is good, enough to "overcome glare easily". HDR is "okay": with tone mapping switched on, the brightest test scene peaked at about 530 nits.
  • Contrast: low. The edge-lit panel has no local dimming, so blacks look grey in a dark room. RTINGS lists "low contrast and no local dimming" first among its criticisms.
  • Motion: "very blurry", owing to a slow response time.
  • Accuracy: poor out of the box, with a cool, bluish tint. Its SDR colour volume measured about 86% of DCI-P3.
  • Viewing angle: narrow, so colours and contrast fade off to the sides. The backlight also flickers (PWM) below maximum brightness.
  • Processing and upscaling: rated great, and build quality excellent. RTINGS says the frame feels more premium than the one on Samsung's The Frame Pro 2026.
Picture Tip

Because RTINGS found the default colour cool and bluish, try a warmer colour temperature or the Filmmaker or Movie preset for TV and films, and keep a brighter mode for daytime. Art Mode has its own brightness controls and a motion sensor that blanks the screen when the room is empty.

Gaming, Sound and Software

Two HDMI 2.1 ports run 4K at up to 144Hz. RTINGS confirmed 4K/120 from a PS5 and an Xbox Series X, VRR of all three types with low-framerate compensation, and Dolby Vision gaming on Xbox. VRR stops working above 144Hz, so the 288Hz mode is a curiosity. The eARC port is HDMI 1, one of the two slower ports, which keeps both fast ports free for consoles.

The 2.0.2-channel speakers are rated at 36W at this size. RTINGS found dialogue clear but "very little bass", and audible compression at full volume. Google TV handles apps, with Google Assistant built in and Alexa, AirPlay and HomeKit support, but RTINGS found an older Google TV version (12) and ads throughout the interface. We found no update promise from Hisense.

Strengths

  • ✓RTINGS-tested size: matte coating handles direct reflections excellently and ambient light barely lifts blacks
  • ✓Teak frame, UltraSlim wall mount and 1,000+ free artworks included, no subscription
  • ✓144Hz with VRR and 4K/120 console support on two HDMI 2.1 ports

Cons

  • ✗Edge-lit with no local dimming: low contrast for dark-room films
  • ✗Very blurry motion and a narrow viewing angle (RTINGS)
  • ✗Out-of-the-box colour is inaccurate, with a cool tint (RTINGS)

What Owners Report

Owner discussions on Reddit (mostly r/Hisense and r/TheFrame, April to September 2026) are positive about the idea and split on the details. Owners like how the art looks, the included frame and the absence of an art subscription, and a 50-inch S7 owner said reflections barely show despite plenty of room light. Several prefer Hisense's Google TV to Samsung's interface, although one owner of both a CanvasTV and a Frame found the Samsung's art more convincing.

The most repeated complaint is a pink or purple cast on white mats in Art Mode. It is a separate issue from the cool tint RTINGS measured in normal picture modes. Firmware updates fixed it for some owners, including one with a 75-inch 2026 model who had to install the update from USB, while an 85-inch owner still saw it in daytime and from an angle. Other reports: the motion sensor that switches Art Mode on and off sometimes failed to wake the picture or to turn it off in an empty room, and one 2026 S7 owner could not get one side of the magnetic frame to sit flush. These are individual reports, not a defect rate, and most owners did not say which exact model code they had.

CanvasTV 2026 vs Samsung The Frame

RTINGS's head-to-head with Samsung's The Frame 2026 found them "pretty evenly matched", with the Hisense "a bit better" because it gets brighter. With tone mapping on, RTINGS measured about 530, 430 and 260 nits in its three HDR test scenes on the CanvasTV, against about 430, 350 and 180 on The Frame. The Frame answers with much smoother motion, HDMI 2.1 on all four ports and up to seven years of updates, but no Dolby Vision, no DTS, frames sold separately and an art subscription for the full library. Our CanvasTV vs Frame comparison and Samsung 55" The Frame review cover the 2025 Frame, which is still sold.

If 65 inches is too much for the wall, the 55-inch CanvasTV 2026 has the same feature set, including 144Hz.

Who Should Buy It, and Who Shouldn't

Buy it if you want a large TV that looks like framed art, the room is bright, and you value a matte screen and an all-in-the-box package over contrast.

Look elsewhere if you watch films in the dark, follow fast sport, or seat people well off to the sides. At 65 inches you can get far better contrast from a Mini-LED; see our best Mini-LED TVs. For a bright room without the art features, our bright-room guide has brighter options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How heavy is the 65-inch CanvasTV 2026, and what wall mount does it need?

Hisense lists the 65-inch at 47.4 pounds and 1.2 inches deep without its stand or frame, with VESA 400 x 300 mounting holes. An UltraSlim wall mount is included in the box, so most buyers will not need to buy one.

Is the 65-inch CanvasTV 2026 better than the 2024 model?

Slightly. RTINGS tested both at 65 inches and scored the 2026 model 6.6 for mixed use against 5.9 for the 2024 S7N. It is a little brighter and its matte coating lets less room light affect the picture. The fundamentals did not change: it is still edge-lit with no local dimming.

Does the CanvasTV 2026 support Dolby Vision?

Yes, including Dolby Vision IQ, plus HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG, and DTS audio through its eARC port. Samsung's The Frame 2026 supports neither Dolby Vision nor DTS.

Is it good for sports?

It is bright enough for a sunny room, but RTINGS found its motion "very blurry" because of a slow response time, and its viewing angle is narrow, which matters for groups watching from the sides. For sport, a faster Mini-LED is a better choice.

Does the CanvasTV get software updates?

It runs Google TV, but RTINGS found an older version (12) on its 2026 test unit, and we found no published update promise from Hisense. Samsung, by contrast, promises up to seven years of updates for The Frame 2026.

Final Verdict

At 65 inches the 2026 CanvasTV is a convincing piece of wall art and a good daytime TV, thanks to a matte screen RTINGS rates highly. It is not a home-cinema TV: edge-lit, low in contrast and blurry with fast motion.

For a sunny living room where the TV should disappear into the décor, it is one of the strongest choices at 65 inches. For a cinema-style room, it is the wrong tool.
